Bike riding can provide a variety of benefits, even if you don't do it every day. Here are three reasons why you might want to start riding a bike as your new form of exercise.
Easier on the Joints
When comparing biking with running, both can help provide a great source of aerobic exercise, but there is one downside to running that you won't have to deal with when riding a bike. With every step you take, you are putting stress on your knees and the rest of your lower body. This is especially true if you are running outside on the hard pavement. By contrast, a bicycle will give your lower body a workout but your feet won't ever actually hit the ground, making this a much more preferable activity if you want to avoid wear and tear on your feet and legs.
Riding a bike can give you an adrenaline rush unlike any other form of exercise. Being able to feel a strong wind as you pedal hard down a steep hill can be quite the feeling. Riding a bike is also an excuse to take the road less traveled. You might find yourself exploring areas of your own neighborhood that you otherwise would not have known existed.
It's Not Just Exercise, It's Transportation
Once you get hooked on biking, you might be finding excuses to ride your bike even when not specifically trying to exercise. If your commute to work isn't that long, riding a bike could become a viable transportation option, allowing you to get some exercise in before you even start your day. Biking is also a very green activity, meaning you'll be helping the environment every time you choose it over your car or truck.
